Seeley welcomes efforts to solve GP shortage in Portadown

23 December, 2016 - by Catherine Seeley

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Catherine Seeley has thanked the Health and Social Care Board, Southern Trust and Health Department for their efforts to resolve the shortage of GP availability in the Bannview Practice in Portadown.

Ms Seeley said:

“I attended a special sitting of the Health Committee on Monday specifically held to deal with the GP shortage in Bannview practice Portadown. It is important to note that all emergency cases will receive an appointment and patients should therefore phone to request an appointment. Patients should only use the Out of Hours Service as a last resort."

She continued:

"Myself and John O’Dowd MLA are in constant contact with the Health and Social Care Board impressing upon them the urgent need to address this shortage.

"We are content that the Board, in conjunction with the Department, are doing all to attract additional GPs to this practice. Indeed one GP has expressed the desire to take on the practice and recruit additional GPs.

"The Board have also engaged the Trust to request nursing assistance in the interim. We will continue to monitor this situation until it is resolved early in the New Year and have requested that the 'Ask my GP Service' is extended to this practice."
