Mary Lou McDonald TD to speak at Dual Diagnosis conference in Cork tomorrow
Sinn Féin Deputy Leader and All Ireland Spokesperson on Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Mary Lou McDonald TD has extended an invitation to all those concerned with mental health, suicide awareness or addiction to a major conference hosted by the UCC Sinn Féin society on Dual Diagnosis.
The conference takes place tomorrow, Thursday 12th January 2017 from 12pm at University Cork.
Deputy McDonald said;
“Dual Diagnosis: Mental health and addiction is part of a national Sinn Féin initiative on mental health. Similar conferences have been held in Dublin and Sligo.
“It has become abundantly clear to me from these conferences that people clearly want to talk about and be heard on this issue.
“That is what has made these conferences so successful. They are about listening to people, giving people a voice, and talking about issues close to their heart.
“The harrowing stories we have heard time and time again across the country illustrate some harsh realities for those with mental health issues - such as the glaring lack of 24/7 crisis intervention services.
“There is growing awareness of this issue and the large attendances at these conferences reflect this reality across towns, cities and communities, professional bodies and the HSE itself. So I welcome the recent appointment by the HSE of a medical lead on Dual Diagnosis.
“We will have speakers from Dual Diagnosis Ireland and from the HSE but most importantly we want to hear from those attending. We want to give them a voice that is not often heard, particularly by state bodies.
“I would encourage all those concerned with mental health, suicide awareness or addiction to attend and I look forward to seeing you there and hearing what you have to say.”
