May's Brexit agenda huge threat to people of Ireland - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the British Prime Minster Theresa May's Brexit agenda is a huge threat to the people of Ireland.
Speaking ahead of a meeting with the EU's chief negotiator on Brexit, Michel Barnier, in Strasbourg Ms Anderson said;
“Theresa May has now confirmed what we have been saying for months – Britain is heading for a very hard Brexit. This will be a disaster for the north of Ireland.
“Not only is the British Government seeking to drag the north of Ireland out of the EU against its will, it is seeking to drag the north out of the European Single Market, the EU Customs Union and the European Court of Justice.
“For the north of Ireland, and Ireland as a whole, this is a huge threat. Our economy is heavily reliant on EU and all-Ireland trade.
“The freedom of movement of people and goods across Ireland is an absolute necessity. Under these plans, the partition of Ireland will be reinforced despite the hollow lip-service of the British Prime Minister in relation to the Common Travel Area.”
“Now, more than ever, the Irish Government must step up to the plate and fight to protect Irish interests.
“The Sinn Féin team in the European Parliament will continue our engagement in the European Institutions to garner support for a designated special status for the north of Ireland within the EU."
