Pearse Doherty TD calls for all politicians to support tracker mortgage scandal victims
Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has called on all politicians to support his motion supporting the victims of the tracker rate mortgage scandal. The motion calls for a full redress scheme that works for victims within a strict deadline and for an overhaul of white collar crime so that those bankers responsible can be held to account.
Speaking during the debate Deputy Doherty said:
“It is my honour to move this motion here tonight – to say clearly and loudly that the Dáil stands with the victims of the tracker scandal and that we want to see the banks sort out the mess they created. Moreover and just as importantly we want to see accountability. We want to see those who oversaw this theft, who implemented the stealing of millions of euro from up to 15,000 Irish families held accountable.
“That is the message I want sent out loudly and clearly today and I hope all TDs can support that call.
“The Central Bank need to make sure that customers are returned to the tracker rate they are entitled to not the tracker rate the bank would like to give. To the banks let us say : Fix the mess you created, stop the weaselling, return the money you stole and put it right. That means putting people back on the right rate, not any old rate and calling it a tracker.
“I will support any victim or any representative that goes to their local Garda station and reports this crime. I urge people who feel they have been robbed to do that. It is their right the same as it is when you are mugged walking down the street. Theft is theft.
“We owe it to those families to stand with them tonight and to send a message to the banks that we will accept nothing short of full redress and fair compensation.”
