HSE’s withdrawal of appeal on hospital consultant pay has immediate and far-reaching consequences - David Cullinane TD
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Public Expenditure and Reform David Cullinane TD has tonight commented on the decision of the Health Service Executive to withdraw its appeal regarding hospital consultants’ pay.
Deputy Cullinane said;
"The decision by the Health Service Executive to withdraw its appeal over consultants pay has immediate and far reaching consequences. This is a monumental blunder and creates a potential crisis in health care funding.
"The state is now potentially facing a much higher pay bill for hospital consultants and it could be as high as €700m. Immediate and serious questions must now be answered. Where will this money come from? Will it be taken from the health budget and if so what services will suffer? At a time when our acute hospitals are at breaking point and record number of patients lie on trolleys this will cause huge concern.
"It is imperative that the Government urgently sets aside time for the Dáil to debate this issue."
