Pearse Doherty TD welcomes passing of Tracker Mortgages motion by Dáil
Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has welcomed the passing by the Dáil of a motion supporting the rights of the thousands of families affected by the tracker mortgage rate scandal.
Deputy Doherty said:
“I welcome the passing of this motion following my Private Members’ Business motion earlier this week.
“As politicians, we have sent out a message of solidarity with the victims and marked the card of the banks that they need to sort out the mess they created.
“This story does not end here. The Central Bank needs to step up to the plate and start defending the victims. A full and fair redress and compensation package within a strict deadline is now a key demand of all sides in the Dáil.
“I am disappointed that the call for the Gardaí, Central Bank and Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement to cooperate in this investigation has been dropped in the Fianna Fáil amendment which was accepted with government support. That amendment also weakened the demand that an overhaul of white collar crime be commenced.
“I strongly support any victims who seek to bring their case to An Garda Síochána and indeed have been approached by some seeking advice on how to go about this issue.”
