Government has ensured that Stardust families will have to wait even longer for the truth - Denise Mitchell TD
Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Bay North Denise Mitchell has said that the families of the Stardust victims will have to wait even longer for the truth because of "the Government pushing the matter down the road today."
She was speaking after the vote in the Dáil on a motion calling for the establishment of a Commission of Investigation into the disaster.
Deputy Mitchell stated:
“What we saw today was three out of the five TDs representing the community of Dublin Bay North voting against the motion and again the delaying the delivery of the truth.
“Particularly disappointing is the fact that Finian McGrath TD, who prior to taking his position in Government, was so vocal in calling for a Commission of Investigation voted for the amendment.
"This was a missed opportunity today to right the wrong of the past in relation to the state’s response to the disaster in 1981.
“The Government will now seek to review evidence again. The reality is that the coalition has opted for pushing the issue down the road as they have with many other issues.
“These families have been waiting thirty-six years for answers, and because of the decision by the Government parties today, they will wait yet further.”
