Adams Initiative Offers Road Map Back To Executive

30 April, 2005

Sinn Féin General Secretary Mitchel McLaughlin today said that there was a clear message coming from the doorsteps to local politicians that people wanted progress made in the time ahead and wanted political institutions back up and running in order for local people to tackle decisively the big issues of job creation; water charges, racism and sectarianism and education and health.

Mr McLaughlin said:

“I have been canvassing constantly for the past number of weeks. I have to say that the consistent message coming from the doorsteps is that people want to see rapid progress made in the political process and want to see sustainable institutions put back in place.

“Given the woeful performance of the part time British Direct Rule ministers the only way in which the big issues of job creation, water charges, racism and sectarianism and education and health can be effectively and decisively dealt with is by locally elected and accountable politicians.

“The recent initiative by Gerry Adams offers all of the participants in the process a road map back into the Assembly and the Executive. People on the doorsteps will be unforgiving of any political party who for whatever selfish or electoral reason fails to grasp this opportunity and the alternative path forward which it offers.” ENDS
