Minister must intervene after ‘provocative action’ by Bus Éireann – Munster
Sinn Féin Transport spokesperson Imelda Munster has branded new ‘cost saving measures’ set to be introduced by Bus Éireann as “provocative”, saying that Minister Shane Ross must intervene now to prevent strike action taking place as a result of these punitive proposals.
The Louth TD said:
“By slashing overtime and Sunday rates and cutting pay alongside other punitive measures, management at Bus Éireann seem content with forcing the issue to industrial action. This race to the bottom when it comes to workers’ pay and conditions is simply deplorable. It was not the workers who created this crisis.
“Proceeding without trade union agreement on the matter only furthers the provocation of these cuts and seems designed to drive workers out on strike. Management has shown deep reluctance to even enter negotiations with the workers and their intransigence could breed chaos for thousands of commuters.
“Minister Shane Ross needs to ditch his laissez-faire attitude and act like a Minister who is interested in protecting both workers and the public transport infrastructure.
“The Minister should bring in all stakeholders to sit around the table for talks on averting strike action and planning for the future. It is time for Shane Ross to display an interest and perhaps some leadership in his portfolio.”
