DUP hostility to Irish Language irrational - Ó Donnghaile
Reacting to reports today in an article by 'The Detail' that DUP ministers and advisers intervened on a policy row over Irish language tourism signs and did not carry out a government equality test before making the controversial decision to cut funding for the Líofa Irish language scheme in December, Sinn Féín Seanadóir Niall Ó Donnghaile said:
“Today’s article in 'The Detail' raises serious questions over the actions of DUP ministers and officials toward the Irish Language and show that they have continually disregarded and disrespected Irish language speakers and any expression of an Irish identity.
“The fact that it is alleged minsters would seek to actively undermine an agreed, inclusive and reflective tourism initiative shows just how irrational this hostility is.
“This is further evidence of the ongoing disregard, disrespect and bigotry of the DUP towards the Irish language and any expression of an Irish identity.
“The revelations regarding Líofa and the failure to even bother equality proofing the scandalous decision to cut the funding is further evidence, if it were needed, of the DUP’s flagrant animosity towards the Irish Language.
“This is why Sinn Féin are asking people to ensure there is no return to the status quo and that we will stand up for equality, integrity and respect.”
