Minister Ross must act to sustain Bus Éireann - Imelda Munster TD
Sinn Féin Transport spokesperson Imelda Munster has written to Minister Shane Ross and appealed to him to give serious consideration to a number of measures which would help ensure the future sustainability of Bus Éireann.
Speaking today Teachta Munster said;
“Shane Ross’ refusal to intervene in the industrial dispute at Bus Éireann can only prolong that dispute.
“Minister Ross has a responsibility to ensure the future sustainability of the Bus Éireann and there are a number of measures he could take which I feel would help to do that. I have therefore written to the Minister today to urge him to take these actions.
“We need a full review of the operations of the Expressway service and the Expressway market along with a review of the loss making routes on which private carriers currently operate, including the number of private licenses issued on these routes.
“There should also be an increase in funding for the Free Travel Pass. As it currently stands, the amount allocated covers just 41% of the cost of the average journey. This has contributed significantly to losses at Expressway.
“The minister should provide clarity regarding the routes and services that have been identified for potential closure as mentioned by Bus Éireann CEO Ray Herman at a meeting of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport this week. Mr Hernan confirmed that routes have been identified for potential closure but refused to identify those routes.
“Finally, I am urging the minister to end his hands-off approach to this issue and to engage with the stakeholders immediately in order to prevent serious travel disruption.”
