Morgan calls for ratification of UN convention to protect migrant workers

1 May, 2005

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Trade and Employment, Arthur Morgan TD has called on the Irish Government to ratify the UN Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrant Workers and their Families.

Speaking at a party meeting in Louth today he said, "Successive Ministers for Enterprise, Trade and Employment have quoted the need for legislative changes as the reason for Ireland not to ratify the UN Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrant Workers and their Families.

"The current Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mi--chael Martin now plans to introduce an Immigration and Residence Bill and that will provide the perfect opportunity to make the relative legislative changes required for Ireland to ratify the convention.

"I am calling on the Minister to do just that. If he truly wants to end the exploitation of migrant workers in this state then he will make the relevant legislative changes and ratify the UN Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrant Workers and their Families." ENDS
