Shannon must Resist Trump Pre-Clearance Guidelines – Gavan

3 February, 2017 - by Paul Gavan

Sinn Féin Senator Paul Gavan was among a large number of Sinn Fein members who joined hundreds of protesters at Shannon Airport last night in a demonstration of solidarity against President Donald Trump’s racist executive orders of exclusion against Muslims entering the United States.

The Castleconnell based Senator saluted the organisers of Shannonwatch who have kept a vigil at the airport for more than 15 years, saying:

“Shannonwatch have recorded the multiple activities of the US war machine in flagrant abuse of our neutrality at Shannon airport for many years. Now the situation has escalated again with the US pre-clearance facilities operating according to a new racist set of guidelines.

“I am calling on the Irish Government to intervene as a matter of urgency to ensure the principles of equality, fairness and justice take precedence over any such guidelines. We live in a state that declares itself a republic, so let’s ensure true republican principles take precedence.

“There is, shamefully, a direct connection between Shannon and the many wars that continue to rage in Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq. That connection is the US military and their use of Shannon as a forward base for their range of military adventures across the Middle East.

“It’s high time that we, as a country, asserted our independence and insisted on an end to the use of our civilian airport as a base for the US war machine. The world needs to send a strong message to Trump to stop him in his tracks, and we can make a start right here in Shannon.”
