Martin Kenny TD pays tribute to retiring councillor Seán MacManus
Sinn Féin TD for Sligo, Leitrim, West Cavan and South Donegal, Martin Kenny, today paid tribute to Sean MacManus who resigned from Sligo County Council after nearly 23 years. Sean also served as Sinn Féin party chairman.
Deputy Kenny said:
“I join with my party colleagues the length and breadth of the country in paying tribute to Seán MacManus, his wife Helen and his family for their work over the years.
“It is impossible to speak of the MacManus family without remembering their loss, when Seán’s eldest son, Joseph, was killed on active service with the IRA in Co Fermanagh in 1992.
“Sean, as well as being party chairman was a member of the ard comhairle for over 20 years and was involved in republican politics since the 1970s. He was a leading light in the H-Blocks campaign and secretary of the Anti-H-Block Committee in County Sligo.
“Seán was involved in the negotiations which led to the Good Friday Agreement as part of the Sinn Féin delegation. He was twice mayor of Sligo and contested the Sligo-Leitrim Dáil seat on several occasions, as well as running as Sinn Féin’s candidate for the EU parliament for Connaught/Ulster.
“I wish Seán the very best in his retirement from the council, but I am sure that he has no intention of retiring from active politics. As the true republican he is, I am sure he will remain active in support of achieving the unity of Ireland.”Ends
