Martin failed Waterford as Health Minister and has now failed Waterford as Employment Minister

4 May, 2005

Waterford Sinn Féin Councillor, David Cullinane has slammed Enterprise, Trade and Employment Minister Míchael Martin for his refusal to meet with a cross party delegation from Waterford City Council to discuss initiatives to create new jobs in the Waterford area. Councillor Cullinane‚'s comments come after it was revealed today that Waterford Crystal is to shed 485 jobs in the County.

Speaking from Waterford today Cllr. Cullinane said, „Waterford City Council has, on numerous occasions, written to the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Míchael Martin to invite him to Waterford to meet a cross party delegation from the City Council to discuss the serious problem of job losses in Waterford and to discuss initiatives to create new jobs in the area. Unfortunately Minister Martin failed to set a date to meet us.

"After the announcement today of further job losses at Waterford Crystal the Minister must set a date to come and meet us before the problem spirals even further out of control. Had he come to meet us in the first place we may not have found ourselves in the position we find ourselves in today.

"The people of Waterford will remember that this is the same Minister that failed this County in his position as Health Minister when he refused to embrace the campaign for a radiotherapy unit at Waterford Regional Hospital. He has now failed us in his position as Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment."ENDS
