Outpatient Cancellations a Government Disgrace - David Cullinane TD
David Cullinane, Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, said today that the doubling of outpatient hospital cancellations at University Hospital Waterford makes a mockery of Government statements that they are fixing the problem. This government is committed only to outsourcing health services to vested interests regardless of the social and human cost.
Deputy Cullinane said:
"Today I received an answer from Minister Harris which stated that cancellations at University Hospital Waterford have doubled in four years, going from 4,257 n 2011 to 8,568 in 2015.
This is on top of last night's revelations on the massaging of waiting list figures and the misery it causes.
Minister Harris has told the media that he is 'ashamed and heartbroken' over the waiting list crisis.
All due respect, but this is not about how the Minister's feels, it is about his lack of action.
His department continues to implement policies that are killing people. That's the bottom line.
How he feels about this is immaterial; what he does about it, well that is the issue.
And Minister Harris, it is clear, is not of a mind to to anything except blame management.
Sinn Féin has a comprehensive plan to tackle the health crisis while the Minister does not.
A doubling of cancellations, increased waiting lists, over-capacity across the health sector - these are all the result of government policy and it is clear that only a change of government can solve it."
