Minister for Justice needs to make Dáil statement as a matter of urgency - Jonathan O'Brien TD

11 February, 2017 - by Jonathan O'Brien TD

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Jonathan O'Brien TD has called on the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald to come before the Dáil as a matter of urgency in order to provide a full and frank account of her knowledge of the meeting between Minister Katherine Zappone and Garda Whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe.

Speaking from Cork this morning, Deputy O'Brien said;

"It is clear that Minister Frances Fitzgerald misled the Dáil last Thursday when questioned about this matter. It is now crucial that she comes before the Dáil to correct the record of the house and to give a full and frank account of her knowledge regarding the purpose of the meeting between Minister for Children Katherine Zappone and Sgt Maurice McCabe.

"It is inconceivable that she was unaware of the nature of the meeting. The version of events she has given do not stand up to scrutiny.

"The Minister needs to set the record straight in an open and truthful manner or she needs to resign."
