Túsla involvement in false McCabe allegations deeply alarming – Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD
Yesterday it emerged that Túsla had held a file on Sgt Maurice McCabe dating back to 2013 followning Sgt McCabe had begun to participate process of whistleblowing on internal issues and malpractice within an Garda Síochána. Túsla have claimed this was down to a clerical error
Sinn Féin Children's spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD has expressed deep alarm that such a file was held, and widely circulated, and has called on TÚSLA to come before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs to outline the situation and clarify whether there are any other similar cases.
Deputy Ó Laoghaire said;
“The fact that such a file, concerning very serious, but unfounded allegations, was held by Túsla, unbeknown to Sgt McCabe, but appears to have been widely known amongst other high ranking Gardaí in the force raises some questions and many concerns in relation to Túsla's practices.”
“These allegations, which have since been found to be untrue, are damaging to the character of Sgt Maurice McCabe, and he is at the very minimum deserving of a public apology on behalf of Túsla.”
“Túsla receives allegations of this nature regularly, and has to treat all information with care, but the manner in which this information was made widely available to others in senior roles within an Garda Síochána due to “a clerical error” is questionable at best, and quite sinister at worst.”
"The Minister for Children released a series of statements yesterday which raised more questions than answers. She needs to outline which cabinet colleagues she briefed, when she briefed them and to what effect she briefed them."
“Sgt McCabe, in my opinion, is extremely brave to have chosen to expose the discrepancies that he did."
"That such a file could be held, raises questions as to whether any other files of this nature are held by Túsla, and I call on Túsla to review it's processes to ensure nothing of this appalling nature happens again, and to ensure the public this will not be repeated.
"I am calling on the CEO of Túsla, and the Minister to come before the Oireachtas Committee on Children to explain this worrying episode."
“Again I reiterate the calls for a full apology from Túsla as a matter of priority so to allow Sgt McCabe to move on from such traumatic and damaging slander.”
