Radiotherapy centre an exemplar of cross border work - O'Neill
The new radiotherapy centre at Altnagelvin Hospital is an exemplar of cross-border working for the benefit of all, Health Minister Michelle O'Neill has said.
The Sinn Féin MLA was speaking following a joint visit with her southern counterpart, Simon Harris TD to the £70 million project in Derry today.
She commented: "This is a superb facility, offering state-of-the-art services to people from throughout the north west region on both sides of the border.
"It is an exemplar of all-island co-operation for the benefit of all citizens. We need to see more of that work right across Government and Simon and I have already committed to do that within our departments because that is the natural thing to do. It simply makes sense."
Such co-operation, the Minister added, was in stark contrast to the position adopted by former UUP Health Minister Michael McGimpsey.
She commented: "It is unfortunate that during Michael McGimpsey's time as health minister, there was a clear resistance to any form of all-Ireland collaboration and this project was shelved.
"However, it is a testimony to all those who refused to accept that decision, who continued to lobby and campaign to ensure that today we have this wonderful facility in place."
