Teacher Redundancies not ruled out by Taoiseach – Nolan

1 March, 2017

Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson on Education and Skills Carol Nolan has today asked the Taoiseach to make a commitment that no teacher would be made forcibly redundant. Teachta Nolan was speaking during Questions on Promised Legislation this afternoon in the Dáil.

The Offaly TD said:

“The Programme for Government makes a commitment to increase education spend by €500 million in 2021, including the recruitment of teachers.

“Yet, we hear reports this week that ASTI teachers are potentially facing forced redundancies. This is of concern and no teacher should be forced into that situation irrespective of union membership.

“I asked the question of the Taoiseach to explain how forcing a teacher to become redundant ties in with the commitment in the programme for Government and if the Taoiseach will commit that no teacher will be made redundant against their will.

“Unfortunately, I found the Taoiseach to be very dismissive in his response and he has failed to rule out any potential redundancies for ASTI members.”
