Critical lack of funding in Irish waste water management is a failure of policy - David Cullinane TD
David Cullinane, Sinn Féin TD for Waterford and member of the Public Accounts Committee, has said that the critical lack of funding in Irish waste water management is a failure of policy that needs to be addressed.
Deputy Cullinane said:
"Today at the Public Accounts Committee, I asked the Secretary General of the Department of the Environment about the Irish government's failure to adhere to EU directives on waste water treatment.
"He confirmed that around 40 treatment centres are not in compliance and that the State may be facing multi-million fines as a result.
"He also confirmed that this is a result of decades of non-investment in waste water treatment.
"The EU directive dates from 2000 with court proceedings initiated in 2013.
"The Irish state had plenty of time to address this situation but seventeen years later and it is still not in compliance.
"The successive failure of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael-led governments to invest is the reason for this situation."
