Tuam Mass Grave Discovery, Demands A Garda Investigation and A Fully Comprehensive Commission of Investigation. -Mary Lou McDonald TD
Speaking today at the annual Flowers for Magdalenes event, Sinn Féin Deputy Leader, Mary Lou McDonald TD, called for a a full Garda investigation into the mass grave discovered at Tuam Mother and Baby home.
The Dublin Central TD has also called for the terms of reference of the Murphy Commission to be extended and for a state apology to every woman and child confined to Mother and Baby Homes and equivalent institutions.
'The gruesome discovery of human remains and a mass grave at Tuam confirm the worst fears of many survivors and campaigners.
'Catherine Corless has been vindicated, she deserves much credit for her commitment to discovering the truth surrounding this mother and baby home
'The Gardaí must now investigate the deaths of these babies and children. The Garda Conmissioner must make clear that priority and resources will be dedicated to this investigation
' Tuam is just one of a vast network of institutions which systematically violated the rights of women and their children. All of them must be investigated
' It is now imperative that the terms of reference of the Murphy Commission are extended to include all institutions - mother and baby homes, county homes and equivalent institutions. This is the only way to get to the truth
' I am calling on An Taoiseach Enda Kenny to amend those terms of reference to allow the Murphy Commission to carry out a complete investigation
' The Taoiseach must also issue an apology to the women, children and families who have been devastated by the cruelty of these institutions and who were so badly failed by the state."
