Successive Governments have allowed post office network to drift towards the cliff - Brian Stanley TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Communications Brian Stanley TD has condemned the inaction of successive governments in dealing with challenges to the post office network.
Deputy Stanley stated:
“Successive Governments and An Post management have been asleep at the wheel and this issue has been allowed to drift on for years with the very survival of the network under threat. This is despite the fact that issues around the future viability of An Post service have been raised since 2003.
“It is important that the excellent postal service we have is retained into the future. The USO next day delivery is a great asset to citizens and businesses in Ireland while the local branches are the lifeblood of rural communities.
“The raising of postage stamps will not succeed in saving the service unless it is coupled by practical action from the Government.
“If the price increase is too high then public use of An Post will only reduce further.
“It would have been preferable if the Government had taken the initiative to reform the service before this point was reached.
“We need to focus now on reinvigorating the network of post offices by extending the services which post offices provide to include motor tax renewals, business rates, rents, and other Government payment services and by the retention of existing services such as social welfare payments.”
