Fresh inquest into McGurk's Bar deaths should be held - Kelly

9 March, 2017 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has said a new inquest should be held into the deaths of those killed in the McGurk's Bar bombing.

Mr Kelly said:

"Relatives of those killed in the McGurk's Bar bombing in 1971 have applied to the Attorney General to hold a fresh inquest into the deaths of those who died in the massacre.

"Despite the mounting weight of evidence, painstakingly uncovered by families and campaigners, there is still doubts around the official account of the bombing.

"The spectre of collusion hangs over this case and the families are entitled to know the truth of how their loved ones died.

"The initial investigation and subsequent reports have failed to establish the full truth. I am urging the Attorney General to respond positively to this request order a fresh inquest.

"Given the new evidence, a fresh inquest into the deaths caused by the McGurk's Bar bombing should be held.

"The families have waited too long already and they deserve the truth."
