Cllr. Enda Fanning welcomes World Kidney Day
Sinn Féin Councillor Enda Fanning has welcomed today, March 9th, as World Kidney Day.
World Kidney Day is a global awareness campaign and aims to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems worldwide.
The worldwide campaign also encourages Transplantation as a best-outcome option for kidney failure, and the act of organ donation as a life-saving initiative.
Speaking earlier today from his Templeogue-Terenure constituency Cllr. Fanning, who recently donated a kidney to a friend, said:
"I hope World Kidney Day will raise awareness concerning organ donation in Ireland and help to increase the numbers prepared to become Living organ donors or to carry Organ Donor cards. Organ donations save lives - since 1964 there have been over 4,500 kidney transplants in Ireland. Last year alone there were 50 live kidney transplants in Beaumont Hospital.
"One point I would emphasis to those carrying Organ Donor cards is that you must also inform your family. Next of kin consent is still required in Ireland so please inform your family that you carry an Organ Donor card and of your intentions."
