Doolan-Residents rally against phone masts

17 May, 2005

Sinn Féin Dublin Sinn Féin Representative, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has today called on, "mobile phone companies to respect both local communities and Dublin City Council's demand that they consult with local communities before any further installations take place here in Dublin."

Speaking ahead of a public meeting tonight, Cllr. Doolan said:

"As mobile phone companies continue to install phone masts across Dublin local communities and their concerns are being ignored. This must stop immediately. Tonight‚s meeting hopes to address this situation. It will demand that companies engage with this community before any more installations take place. Residents must be fully consulted with and must have their concerns fully and adequately dealt with. This can only be done when companies engage with these communities.

"3G have erected a mast in a residential community here in the south inner city without any consultation at all. It took days of phone calls and messages to even find out if the installation took place. This is totally unacceptable. The aim of the meeting is to co-ordinate a campaign which will be lead by the residents demanding to be heard. The concerns are genuine and deserve to be addressed immediately. We will no longer be ignored by these companies.

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan, demanded mobile phone companies, "to listen to our concerns and work with communities to overcome them."ENDS

'Stop the Phone Mast' public meeting, 7:30pm, Whitefriar Street Community Centre, Aungier Street, Dublin 8.
