Sinn Féin supports Migrants Rights Centre Justice for the Undocumented campaign - Eoin Ó Broin TD
Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Mid-West Eoin Ó Broin speaking has pledged Sinn Féin support for the campaign ahead of the Migrant Rights Centre of Ireland Justice for Undocumented campaign rally this evening.
Deputy Ó Broin said:
“The rally this evening highlights the plight of undocumented people both in this state and in the US. The undocumented migrant leaders of the Justice for the Undocumented campaign here aim to send a message of solidarity to the undocumented in the US ahead of St Patrick's Day.
“While the Taoiseach and other Irish politicians spend this week in the US highlighting the plight of the undocumented Irish there, I think it is also important to draw attention to the plight of the estimated 26,000 undocumented migrants living and working in this State.
“The Migrant Rights Centre Justice for the Undocumented campaign is calling for the introduction of a regularisation scheme to allow undocumented migrants the chance to come forward and regularise their situation.
“Sinn Féin supports this call. We need a process in place to regularise the status for migrants who have lived and worked here for a number of years. Just as its right that the Irish in the US are seeking the right to regularise their status we need to also recognise the contribution of undocumented migrants here.”
