We must defend our local post offices – McDonald
Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald TD last night launched a local campaign in Dublin Central to defend its Post Offices from closure by the government. The Dublin Central TD was speaking at a public meeting held in Cabra.
Deputy McDonald said:
“Last night, we heard from Ned O’Hara (Secretary General of the Post Masters Union) and local postmasters on the actual impact which post office closures would have for my constituents in the event that services were cut by the government.
“The speakers expressed real concern that the local community will lose this essential service. It is clear from recent correspondence that I’ve received from the government that they are doing little to support the vital services provided by our post offices.
“Mr O’Hara outlined a number of measures including expanding the services of An Post which would help secure the future of Post Offices in Cabra.
“Members of the public have expressed real concerns and fears at the possible loss of this vital service particularly for the elderly. I pledged at the meeting to defend our post offices and I will lead a campaign in the time ahead against possible closures.”
