Continued underfunding of maternity services must stop – Kathleen Funchion TD

28 March, 2017 - by Kathleen Funchion TD

Sinn Féin TD Kathleen Funchion has hit out at successive governments for continually underfunding maternity services.

Speaking today Teachta Funchion said more than 600 midwives are needed just to achieve basic safety standards.

She said;

“Our maternity services have been repeatedly underfunded over the last 20 years. We are lagging way behind international standards.

“Our services are severely understaffed, lacking both midwives and obstetricians. More than 600 midwives need to be recruited to achieve basic safety levels.

“We also have the lowest number of obstetricians per 100,000 women across all OECD countries.

“Successive governments have failed to take action on this issue.

“Sinn Féin has a plan for Ireland’s maternity services which would place women and babies at its centre.

“We would recruit the 621 midwives required to bring hospitals up to basic safety levels as well as measures to alleviate overcrowding by minimising unnecessary interventions and expanding Midwife Led Units for low-risk pregnancies.

“We would also recruit an additional 239 obstetricians/gynaecologists, which would double the number in the service.

“Sinn Féin has the solutions to fix the chaos in our health services.”
