Garda Commissioner ‘needs to go’ – McDonald
Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald TD today at Leaders’ Questions in the Dáil has called on the Taoiseach to restore public confidence in the Gardaí by removing the Nóirín O’Sullivan as Garda Commissioner.
Deputy McDonald said:
“Today during Leaders’ Questions, I called on the Taoiseach to remove the Garda Commissioner from office.
“In the past under this Commissioner’s leadership, we have seen the penalty points scandal, the controversy around the tapping of phone calls at Garda stations, the smear campaigns waged against whistle-blowers.
“Now, we have the scandalous situation of false convictions and one million fabricated breath tests.
“The dysfunctional culture prevalent in An Garda Síochána will only continue while the current Commissioner remains in her position.
“Each new controversy seriously damages the confidence the public have in An Garda Síochána. These scandals also raise serious questions around the management and operation of An Garda Síochána.
“The Taoiseach needs to show the sort of leadership that he has been sorely lacking up to now.
“It is now imperative that the Taoiseach acts resolutely and immediately in order to restore public confidence in the Garda Síochána.
“The Garda Commissioner needs to go and go now.”
