Ireland must ratify Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities without further delay – Mitchell
Sinn Féin TD Denise Mitchell has said that the inaction of Minister Finian McGrath over the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) shines a light on him, this Government, and previous Governments in their disregard for those with disabilities in our society.
The TD for Dublin Bay North said::
“I attended a protest outside Leinster House today held by those seeking the ratification of the UN Convention. The framework was signed in 2007, but has still not been made legally binding.
“Minister Finian McGrath has been in his position of Minister of State with responsibility for disabilities for over 10 months now. When he took office, he said that the convention would become law within 6 months and we are still waiting.
“It is baffling why the Minister and his Government continue to ignore this issue and will not provide the substantive rights to those with disabilities. The Minister must realise that people have been waiting far too long and that they deserve action now.”
