Significant progress made at water committee – Ó Broin

4 April, 2017 - by Eoin Ó Broin TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Water Eoin Ó Broin TD has said there was significant progress made today at the water committee as decisions were finally made on the funding section of the report.

Deputy Ó Broin said:

“Today, significant progress was made in the Oireachtas Water Committee. Decisions were made on the funding section of the report which make it clear that domestic water services should be funded through existing general taxation. It was also agreed to remove the proposal to make the State a customer of Irish Water.

“Fine Gael lost a number of votes which sought to introduce a separate charge for so-called excessive use. Sinn Féin has consistently said that such a charge is unnecessary, expensive, and a distraction from tackling the real waste in the public water infrastructure.

“The Committee is due to resume again tomorrow. We will be tackling the issue of metering in new builds and the issue of tackling wilful waste. Sinn Féin and the other Right2Water TDs will be tabling amendments on these issues.”
