Bus strike reveals hollowness of TDs pledges to protect Rural Ireland – Tóibín
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Rural Ireland Peadar Tóibín TD has said that the bus strike has exposed the election promises made by Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran and Seán Canning.
The Independent TDs, whose pledges to protect rural Ireland helped secure their election, have been conspicuously silent on the issue of the ongoing bus strikes.
An Teachta Tóibín said:
“Strike action across our public transport services is causing havoc state wide, particularly in rural Ireland where people are so dependent on these networks to access work, education, shops and services. It is a lifeline.
“This current crisis has come about because Minister Ross has been happy to oversee the continual undermining of our public transport, which ultimately suits his agenda to privatise what is an essential public service.
“His failure to take action, as Minister, has been shocking and so disdainful of striking workers as well as the hundreds of thousands of people left stranded. However, I am equally appalled at the thundering silence from other government TDs.
“How is it that Boxer Moran and Seán Canning see it as appropriate to do absolutely nothing while countless thousands in rural Ireland have been abandoned? These are the very people they were elected to serve.
“If they had any integrity as elected politicians, they should at least attempt to address the current impasse. However, they were noticeably silent on the closure of bus routes so their current position of silence is no surprise.
“Despite using their political pull to plead with their government colleagues to take action, they are simply following the lead of Minister Ross, and that is to completely disengage from their duties to serve the ordinary citizens of the state.”
