Call for big mobilisation for Easter 2017 – Warfield
Speaking at the GPO today, Sinn Féin Senator Fintan Warfield called for people in Dublin to commemorate the 101st anniversary of the 1916 Rising by wearing the Easter lily and attending commemorations organised by Sinn Féin, the main commemoration being on Easter Sunday 16 April.
Launching the annual Easter lily appeal to commemorate Ireland's patriot dead, Senator Warfield said:
“Every year, Irish republicans wear the Easter lily to honour the men and women of 1916 and all those patriots who gave their lives for Irish freedom. In 2016, hundreds of thousands of people participated in Centenary events all over both the country and world. It is no less important in 2017 to commemorate and celebrate the 1916 Rising and to commit to the full implementation of the Proclamation.
“Now, more than ever, we need to see implemented the principles of equality and sovereignty set out in the Proclamation. Sinn Féin is stepping up the campaign for an Irish Unity referendum. We want to ensure that a United Ireland of Equals is the lasting legacy of the men and women of 1916 and all our patriot dead.”
Senator Warfield announced that the main Dublin Easter commemoration will be on Easter Sunday, 16 April, assembling at 2.30pm at the Garden of Remembrance and parading to the 1916 Plot in Glasnevin Cemetery.
The main speaker will be Sinn Féin’s leader in the Six Counties, Michelle O'Neill MLA.
