Commission on future of policing must be a Government priority – O’Brien
Sinn Féin TD and Justice spokesperson Jonathan O’Brien has commented after the announcement by the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald that a Commission on the future of policing is to be established, saying that this is something that Sinn Féin have been calling for for quite some time and that it must be a priority for Government.
The Cork North-Central TD said:
“The announcement by the Minister for Justice is to be welcomed. Sinn Féin have been calling for a Patten-style Commission for some time and we believe that such a Commission is essential to bring about the reform needed renew public confidence in An Garda Síochána.
“I await the circulation of the draft terms of reference and look forward to having an input as we must get this right if the damage of the recent scandals is to be repaired and the failures that led to such scandals not be allowed to return.
“I am very conscious however that the Oireachtas is about to go into recess for a fortnight and this is not a matter that can be put off indefinitely. It must be a priority for Government.”
