Adams welcomes HSE move on access for Orkambi

11 April, 2017 - by Gerry Adams TD

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has welcomed this evening’s announcement by the Minister for Health Simon Harris that a deal has been reached in principle between the HSE and Vertex on the provision of the Orkambi drug for citizens with cystic fibrosis.

Teachta Adams said:

“I want to welcome Minister Harris’s statement in the Dáil this evening that the HSE and Vertex have reached an agreement in principle to ensure that Orkambi is to be made available to cystic fibrosis patients.

“This is a massive victory for those who have spent months fighting for access to what will be a life changing drug for many citizens and I want to wholeheartedly congratulate the campaigners involved.

“We have heard from many with cystic fibrosis and their family members, emotive and heart-breaking stories. We have heard from parents who have buried their children, and patients who manage gruelling daily medical regimes and who endure recurrent hospitalisation.

“This is their victory and we must now ensure that Orkambi is made available without delay.”
