Peadar Tóibin TD rejects ‘baseless’ accusation that he abused his position as Oireachtas Committee Chairperson
The Chairperson of the Oireachtas Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Committee, Sinn Féin TD Peadar Tóibín, has rejected an accusation today from Labour Senator Aodhán Ó Riordán that he abused his position as chair of the committee when he questioned representatives of the Board of Directors of the National Museum in relation to long running claims of bullying, HR disfunction and other serious accusations.
Speaking this evening Teachta Tóibín said;
“I refute completely the accusation by Aodhán O Riordán that I abused my position as chair of the committee today. It is a baseless accusation.
“We received on two occasions advice from the Oireachtas Legal Division concerning the line of questioning and I am confident that I remained within this advice.
“Unfortunately Aodhán Ó Riordán has only attended a handful of Committee meetings in the last year and by his own admission knew nothing of the crisis that is effecting so many people.
“Just four months ago 70% of staff within the National Museum of Ireland surveyed said that they wanted Mental Health support to deal with stress and depression due to their working environment.
“Some 40% of staff stated that they are bullied and 40% of staff stated that they were at risk of developing anxiety or depression. If these figures effected any other state employees such as teachers for example, of course the Education Committee would make sure they discussed it.
“My concern is that whistle blowers and victims have for years been shut down with in an effort to air their real complaints in the National Museum of Ireland and today Senator Ó Riordán sought to shut down an opportunity to discuss their issues again.”
