Redress Scheme ‘a Monumental Failure of Policy’ – Cullinane
Speaking today at the Public Accounts Committee, Sinn Féin TD for Waterford David Cullinane lambasted the Department of Education for the inherent failures in the design and implementation of the redress scheme of clerical child abuse.
Deputy Cullinane said:
“The final cost of the redress scheme is estimated to be €1.5 billion, with the religious congregations legally required to pay only eight per cent of that.
“This is shocking and a damning indictment on the way this State deals with the crimes of the Church.
“We need accountability for the problems with the redress scheme.
“It is not enough to say that lessons have been learnt.
“Questions have to asked as to the scope and design of the scheme.
“Was the scheme designed to limit the Church's exposure to the financial costs and legal consequences arising out of decades of abuse and cover-up?
“If it wasn't, then a bill of eight per cent of the overall cost is quite the unintentional error.
“We need to get to the bottom of this and ensure that accountability is realised and justice is served.”
