Munster pledges full support for bus drivers as they prepare to ballot
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Transport Imelda Munster TD has commented on the matter of the recommendations made by the Labour Court on the Bus Éireann dispute. All Bus Éireann workers are expected to be back at work by tomorrow morning, pending a ballot in the coming weeks on today’s recommendations.
Deputy Munster said:
“The workers at Bus Éireann need time to consider the proposals made by the Labour Court. They have had a long three weeks on the picket line and now they need time and space to consider how best to proceed, whether that be accepting or rejecting the proposals from the Labour Court.
“The workers have my full support whatever decision they make. For the bus workers, this was all about protecting the public bus network and protecting their rights as workers.
“All modern economies see the benefit of a government funding a public transport network, and they recognise that public transport is a vital service. Other jurisdictions that have privatised their public transport network have lived to regret it. Fares rocketed for the travelling public and government subsidies ended up costing the taxpayer multiple times what the original public system had cost.
“The bigger picture here is the protection of our public transport network as a public service connecting rural and urban areas and ensuring workers’ rights are respected.”
