Pat Sheehan calls on support for Palestinian prisoners
Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on the Middle East, Pat Sheehan MLA, has sent his solidarity to the over 1,000 Palestinians prisoners on hunger strike, called on Israel to end its policies of oppression, and for the international community to support the prisoners just demands.
MLA Pat Sheehan said:
“Some 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails are currently on hunger strike. They are protesting against the inhumane and degrading treatment they experience daily. They are also protesting against the torture and medical negligence they face and which threatens their lives.
“The prisoners demand better prison conditions and an end to the Israeli policies of administrative detention and solitary confinement. Administrative detention is a euphemism for internment without trial and 500 Palestinians are currently imprisoned without trial under this inhumane system.
“I send my solidarity, on behalf of Sinn Féin, to all Palestinian prisoners currently on hunger strike and am calling on the Israeli authorities to urgently address the reasonable and humane reforms that they are demanding.”
"Israeli aggression, and oppression, cannot and will not work, despite the current imprisonment of over 6,500 Palestinians. Israel needs to abide by International law and UN resolutions.
"Sinn Féin calls for the international community to hold Israel to account on human rights issues and support freedom and nationhood for the people of Palestine on the basis of the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital."
