Dysfunctional corporate culture within An Garda Síochána cannot be changed from within – Cullinane
Sinn Féin TD and member of the Public Accounts Committee David Cullinane said today that sloppy practices and maladministration underpin the Templemore Garda College scandal and are indicative of a highly dysfunctional culture at the heart of An Garda Síochána.
Deputy Cullinane said:
“The bottom line is that it is not possible for the Commissioner to say that she is changing a corporate culture while at the same time defending that culture.
“The lack of personal sanction for wrongdoing with An Garda Síochána is being defended here today by the Commissioner.
“The Commissioner today has created the impression that she is minimising this issue.
“Yet, promises have been given in the past and they have not been acted upon.
“Decades of maladministration and sloppy practices within Templemore Garda College is one issue; the other is the feet-dragging by Garda management to confront and challenge this situation.
“The endemic, dysfunctional culture within An Garda Síochána cannot be changed by a management hierarchy that are products of that dysfunctional culture.
“This can only be addressed when a clear-out of the old guard takes place.”
