Garda Commissioner must resign - David Cullinane TD

5 May, 2017 - by David Cullinane TD

Sinn Féin TD David Cullinane, a member of the Public Accounts Committee, has said contradicting evidence given to the committee yesterday by the Garda Commissioner Noirín O’Sullivan and the Executive Director of Human Resources Mr John Barrett, show that Ms O’Sullivan’s position is untenable and called on her to resign.

Speaking this afternoon Teachta Cullinane said;

“My party has already called for Ms O’Sullivan to resign over recent Garda scandals the most recent of which being the breath tests scandal.

“We are glad to see this evening the Fianna Fáil has caught up with the rest of us and realised the commissioner’s position is no where near tenable.

“The Executive Director of Human Resources Mr Barrett gave very clear and articulate evidence yesterday with notes to back up his views.

“He spectacularly contradicted the commissioner on the nature of the meeting they had in Templemore in July 2015.

“We also heard compelling evidence from the Head of Internal Audit Mr Niall Kelly. He said that he believes he was ‘duped’ when he was told action would be taken about financial irregularities at Templemore and that he believes that the Gardaí were circling the wagons.

“It is clear from this evidence that the commissioner does not enjoy the confidence of the Gardaí’s own head of its internal audit system.

“Ms O’Sullivan’s position is not tenable and she should resign immediately.  If she does not then Minister Fitzgerald must intervene.”
