Good Friday Agreement Committee supports call for Irish Language Act in the North
Sinn Féin Seanadóir Niall Ó Donnghaile, who sits on the Oireachtas Committee for the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, has welcomed the Committee’s support for an Irish Language Act after today’s presentation by Conradh na Gaeilge.
Speaking after the meeting in Leinster House Seanadóir O Donnghaile said;
“Today’s endorsement is a significant move by the GFA Committee.
"The implementation of a rights based, legislative Irish Language Act and full rights and equality remains an unfulfilled promise of Agreements in the North.
"The Oireachtas, a majority of MLA’s in the North as well as international experts such as the UN and European Committee of Experts all support the need for an Irish Language Act. Our Committee adds its voice to those calls and supports the recommendations as laid out comprehensively today by Conradh na Gaeilge.
"It’s time for an Acht na Gaeilge.”
