Sinn Féin will put the need for North to be designated special status within EU directly to Barnier
Speaking in advance of the Sinn Féin Ard Chomhairle meeting today in Newry, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD said:
“When Michel Barnier visits the Oireachtas next week he needs to hear the clear message that the North should be designated special status within the EU.
“That is the position the Dáil voted for, but it is not the position being advocated by the Taoiseach or the government. Instead he is advocating the Fine Gael position. That is unacceptable.
“Designated Special Status for the North is the only way to prevent a land frontier on the island of Ireland.
“The Taoiseach has not only failed to promote this position and to accept the vote of the Northern electorate, he has also refused to explain why he is not advocated this position.
“Sinn Féin will be putting the need for the North to be accorded special status directly to Mr Barnier.”
