Sinn Féin comment on Kathleen O’Toole appoint to chair Garda reform – O’Brien
Speaking following the Taoiseach’s announcement today that Kathleen O’Toole will chair the Commission to examine Garda reform, Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Jonathan O’Brien TD said that the appointment was welcome and the Government now need to move to ensure strong terms of reference is put in place.
The Cork North Central TD said:
“Kathleen O’Toole has a record of good work in the past regarding the Garda Inspectorate and participating in the Patten Commission.
“Her appointment is welcome and I am calling on the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald to move quickly with ensuring there’s a strong terms of reference in place so that the Commission can do its work effectively.
“This cannot be delayed any further.
“We are facing scandal after scandal in the Gardaí, headed by a Commissioner who is subject of a Tribunal and refuses to stand down, and what little confidence the public had in policing in this State is ebbing away.
“The Minister must ensure that the reform Commission is up and running as a matter of urgency.”
