Moore Street oversight committee must be appointed immediately – Tóibín
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Heritage, Peadar Tóibín TD, has highlighted the need for urgency in the Government appointing a group responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Moore Street Report. This report which was published last month had outlined a credible vision for the restoration of Moore Street as a historic and cultural quarter.
Deputy Tóibín said:
“The Moore Street Report was a document which arose from months of meetings with stakeholders, traders and politicians as well as having input from the public. The report is a comprehensive document which respects the integrity and potential of the iconic Moore Street battlefield site.
“While we are very satisfied with the outcome of the report, it will not be meaningful without due action. We are now waiting for the Government to develop an oversight group for the implementation of the recommendations of the Moore Street Report. I am calling on the Government to expedite this process as the timeline for action is diminishing every day.
“The battle to save Moore Street has been an epic one, between that of corporate Ireland and the people of Ireland; whereby big developers have sought to take over the area and to strip its identity and ties with 1916 away from it completely. We have fought against this happening.
“Therefore, it is imperative that an oversight group be established as soon as possible to ensure that our National Monument is finally given the respect and investment as a cultural and historic quarter that is due.”
