Cullinane welcomes PAC investigation into handling of Templemore issues
Sinn Féin member of the Public Accounts Committee David Cullinane TD today welcomed the acceptance of his recommendation that the PAC examine process and procedure regarding internal and external controls surrounding Templemore Garda Station.
Deputy Cullinane said:
“The Public Accounts Committee today agreed to my proposal that we investigate systems, practices, and procedures with regard to financial irregularities at the Garda Training College.
“The Committee will carry out a time-limited examination of process failures both within An Garda Síochána and also with regard to the relationship between An Garda Síochána and the C&AG.
“There is a serious public need for such an investigation, one that will not stray into the audit issues themselves but into the handling of those issues once it came to light.
“In my opinion, the report needs to answer, as best it can, the following questions:
“How were the issues regarding the Garda College handled by An Garda Síochána?
“What was the role of the Department of Justice in all of this and how well did its relationship with An Garda Síochána function with regard to the issue at hand?
“What can we learn from this in terms of process and procedure?
“The details will be ironed out at next week’s meeting with the issue of public accountability at the front and centre of our discussion.”
