Sinn Féin welcome supervised injection centre Bill – O’Brien

11 May, 2017 - by Jonathan O'Brien TD

Speaking following the passing of legislation to allow the establishment of supervised injection facilities for drug users, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Drugs Jonathan O’Brien TD said that this new direction in harm reduction policy was welcome and should be built upon.

The Cork North Central TD said:

“Sinn Féin welcomes this initiative and believes it is a positive step forward in terms of providing drug users with supervised premises where they can access health care.

“This initiative shouldn’t be considered as the answer, but rather the first step in a road towards harm reduction services that will give people options.

“This move is acknowledgment of the realities of the lives of drug users.

“I commend the work of Anna Liffey and other projects who have been advocating for this for years.

“It is time now for the Government to set aside the resources to establish the supervised injection facility and further examine the potential of establishing drug consumption rooms.”
