O’Neill welcomes Barnier visit to border communities

12 May, 2017 - by Michelle O'Neill

Sinn Féin leader in the North Michelle O’Neill has welcomed the visit by EU Chief negotiator Michel Barnier to Monaghan today to find out for himself how Brexit will impact on border and rural communities.

Speaking today during a visit to the Balmoral Show Michelle O’Neill said:

“Michel Barnier will today see for himself how Brexit will have a devastating impact on commerce and communities right across the border region.

“I very much welcome the fact he has taken the time to come here because, as the EU's Chief Brexit Negotiator, it's vital he witnesses how a new border will decimate local communities, business, farms and the wider agri-food industry.

“Unlike Theresa May, Michel Barnier is prepared to listen to those concerns and to seek imaginative and flexible solutions to avoid the nightmare scenario which the Tories and their DUP allies are trying to force upon us.

“The best way to do that is through special designated status to enable the North to remain in the EU because as Michel Barnier told the Oireachtas yesterday, if the North leaves the EU, border controls will be inevitable.”
