Hazzard calls on Trust to safeguard future of Daisy Hill Hospital
Speaking following a rally in support of Daisy Hill in Newry today, Westminster candidate for South Down, Chris Hazzard MLA, urged the Southern Health and Social Care Trust to recognise the strength of feeling and the need in the community for protection and enhancement of services at Daisy Hill:
‘While the Trust have postponed the decision to temporarily close Daisy Hill Emergency Department, the community of Down, Newry and Armagh deserve a firm commitment to protect and enhance the health services available at our local hospital.
‘This is an area with a rapidly growing population, with increasingly numbers of young and elderly citizens alike. Indeed, a significant number of people cross the border every day to access healthcare at Daisy Hill. This intensifies the need for high-quality and immediately accessible health services at a local level.
‘Sinn Féin has voiced the concerns of the community to the Trust in several meetings in recent months. This entire area, but especially rural areas, will be placed at a significant disadvantage by the closure or relocation of services at Daisy Hill.
‘Sinn Féin will stand with our community and will fight for investment in public services, and any attempts to impose health inequalities on the people of Down, Newry and Armagh.’
